Metro 2039's Gamescom trailer is more interesting when the Stranger stops shooting
A pneumatic rifle looks good in a trailer. A cutting torch tells us more about how a level may actually work. Metro 2039's new Gamescom footage spends enough time on both to make its intentions clearer: 4A Games still wants combat to feel physical, but some of the more useful additions are tools that let the player interfere with the environment.
The February window is staying put
4A Games debuted the Renegade gameplay trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25. It is the second substantial gameplay video after June's Hunter trailer.
February 2027 is repeated at the end. That timing was already announced on June 7, so Gamescom has not produced a new release date. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC are still scheduled to launch together.
Metro's new tools create routes instead of waypoints
The Shatun is a powerful pneumatic rifle that has to be kept pumped if the player wants its full impact. It fits neatly into Metro's long-running preference for weapons and equipment that require attention instead of behaving like invisible systems.
The breaching tool and cutting torch are different. Weak walls can be blasted open, while welded doors can be cut through. 4A says those interactions can expose alternate paths, hidden caches and additional environmental stories.

The UV light has an even broader job description. It can reveal concealed mutants, drive away the new flying Insectalis and expose codes or puzzle information.
None of these mechanics requires Metro 2039 to become an open-world game. They can make handcrafted spaces denser by giving individual rooms more than one reason to exist.
Sevastopolskaya is being dismantled from the inside
Renegade also introduces Sevastopolskaya as a significant stop in the Stranger's journey. The station remains independent, but its stability is being eroded by agitators, propaganda and alcohol while Novoreich-backed Raiders apply pressure from outside.
The Stranger enters the station looking for information connected to the person he is pursuing. 4A Games is still withholding that target's identity.
It is a useful setup for a series that has traditionally made its stations feel like societies rather than rest areas between firefights. The danger here exists before anybody points a rifle at the player.

There is still plenty of Moscow above the tunnels
The surface footage shows an irradiated city thawing into a different kind of ruin. Abandoned playgrounds, bodies and destroyed infrastructure sit alongside the monsters and radiation.
Metro 2039 remains a single-player game built around exploration, survival, combat and stealth in 4A Games' proprietary engine.
Gamescom attendees can go hands-on with it in Hall 9.1. Everyone else still has a release window rather than a date: February 2027.
